Self-study or a language course: how to choose
Neither self-study nor a course is automatically better. The useful choice depends on your deadline, access to feedback, budget and ability to organise deliberate practice.
Identify the missing resource
If you already study consistently but cannot diagnose speaking errors, feedback may matter most. If scheduling is the problem, flexibility may matter more than another curriculum.
Check the teaching quality
Look for clear outcomes, sample material, correction practices and qualified instructors. Avoid deciding from a level label or marketing promise alone.
Protect active practice
A course can still be passive and an app can still support production. Check how often you must retrieve, speak, write and respond to new input.
Consider a hybrid plan
Use independent review for repetition and a teacher or exchange partner for interaction, feedback and questions that require judgment.
Set a review date
Decide what you will check after four to six weeks, such as completed tasks and repaired patterns. Change the format when the method is not serving the goal.
